Interview

Corey Ben Yehuda (Kids Insane)

One of the great thing about Punk Rock is how universal its spirit of revolt and aggression is. We can find inspired bands literally anywhere in the world and straying of the beaten path of North America and Europe is sure to bring lots of interesting discoveries. Hailing from Israel, Kids Insane is one of those. Playing no-frills modern Punk Rock with a dash of Hardcore, they sound familiar without being generic, with just enough catchiness to stick to your mind. The band just launched their 4th release, a new 6 minutes/6 songs EP titled Who’s The Enemy, out on Taklitim Holim. Produced by Yotam Ben Horin (from Useless ID) and mixed/mastered by Jason Livermore at The Blasting Room, you just know that it’ll sound as good as it gets. Check out what frontperson Corey Ben Yehuda has to say!

RAMONES – Ramones. Of course I listen to it!!!!

What are some of your favorite song lyrics? Lyrics that have been important to you or that had an impact on you?
I really love SCREECHING WEASEL’s I wrote Holden Caufield. The C part in that song always gives me shivers, fills me up with hope, calms my nerves and makes me think about life.

Do you have an absolute all time favorite band or musical artist?  What makes them so special to you?
I have many, but one that I can definitely feel whole about is GORILLA BISCUITS.

As a kid from Tel Aviv that just finished high school and grew up on punk rock, I got to fly and see GB play CBGB’s. That experience kind of changed my life, and getting to be there and see that was eye opening for me in many ways that set the tone for my way of life.

What are your ten favourite albums of all time (all genres)?
Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison
Blondie – Parallel Lines
The Beatles- Rubber Soul
Sex Pistols – Nevermind The Bollocks
Bayside – The Walking Wounded
Black Sabbath – Masters Of Reality
Descendents – Milo Goes To College
The Lillingtons – Death By Television
Carry On – A Life Less Plagued
Martha Argerich – Steinway Legends

Do you remember the first time music had an impact on you?
Well as a kid that grew up in the 90’s, I used to sit and watch cartoons all day, I distinctively remember theme songs from tv shows, one of my first memories was waiting for the He-man intro as a kid, and when it came on everyday, I ran to my parents room and grabbed an umbrella imagining it was a sword. I dont think I ever really watched the actual show. The intro was the highlight for me.

What were you listening to in elementary school? Then in high school? How much of that music is still a part of your playlists today? How have your musical tastes evolved since?
As a kid I fell in love with Rap music, an Israeli band called SHABAK SAMECH, it had a kind of RATM vibe. That brought me into the world of Rap overseas, 2PAC was a big influence on me as a kid. When I went into high school I discovered Punk Rock while playing Tony Hawks Pro Skater, that changed everything.

What beloved music do you share with your parents? Any specifics memories?
THE BEATLES. Everything about them.

Is there any band that you’ve always wanted to see live but never had the chance to catch them? Any classic show that you wish you could have experienced?
Would love to go back in time and see BAD BRAINS play live in their first years, same for The GERMS and BLACK FLAG.

One show I would dream to see is the first time RAMONES played England.

What is the most impressive band you’ve toured with? The one that you just had to watch every night? Did you learn anything from them/by watching them?
Have to go with NOFX, I grew up listening that band, and saw them many times before I got to tour with them. And still, on that tour, I didn’t miss one set of NOFX.

What are some of your all-time favorite music books and/or zines, documentaries, biopics?
Film- American Hardcore is one of my favorites for sure.

Books – “All Ages” and NOFX’s Hepatitis Bathtub

Is there any classic / universally acclaimed artist that you missed out on when they first came out and discovered way later? Any artist that you didn’t like at first and learned to appreciate over time?
Well, when BAYSIDE blew up a lot of my friends LOVED them, I really didn’t, I kinda hated that band.

After a few years that totally changed, today Bayside are one of my go to Pop-Punk bands and I keep on loving their new stuff.

Do you have an artist that you love in a genre that you don’t usually listen to? What makes them stand out?
I don’t listen to much electronic music but I love PRODIGY – Fat Of The Land. You definitely cannot listen to that album and stay apathetic.

Do you enjoy live albums? What are some of your favorites? Can you think of a few examples where the live version of a song is better than the studio version?
All the RAMONES live albums sound like they are on speed, they probably actually are and I love that.

That JOHNNY CASH one at Folsom is probably his best record.

Name one or several cover songs where the cover is better than the original? What makes them superior?
THE BEATLES – Twist and Shout
